Works Salvation vs. Faith Alone by Grace Alone…

Ephesians-2-10-works

Often when speaking to people about our most holy faith the issue of what the believer is to do and not do comes up.  The old adage, “Faith alone by grace alone not of ourselves that no one can boast.”  will come up to defend living in sin as a carnal ‘Christian’.  Of course there are verses that could support this idea.

Eph 2:8-9  For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.     [But, don’t forget vs. 10,] “ For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

There is also Rom 9:11   (for the children not yet being born, nor having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works but of Him who calls)

Any Christian who is worth a lick of salt will confer to the Holy Spirit to confirm through the Holy Scriptures whether or not a particular doctrine or idea is true.  So, how can there be so much abhorrence to the idea of the believer actually doing things that are good and holy according to the Bible?  Why is there such an aversion to the idea that whether we are saved or not is based on the idea that we are bearing good fruit for the King and the Kingdom to come?  Why come up with fairy tales like; imputed righteousness, unconditional salvation, OSAS, etc to try and comfort ourselves while we do the work of the devils in our hearts and minds and go to ‘church’ while calling ourselves believers?

Jesus equated belief with obedience to the Light.

John 3:17-21   For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. “He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.  For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.”

So, here we see belief equated with good deeds, and unbelief equated with sin or bad deeds because men love sin and not Jesus.  On top of that Jesus condemns the unbelieving doers of evil.  This should cause men to quake in their spiritual boots whichever side you find yourself at any given moment.  The bishop of the church in Jerusalem, James couldn’t be more clear about faith and works.

James 2:14-26  What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him?  If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.  You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!  But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead?  Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar?  Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect?  And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.  You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only. Likewise,   was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way?  For  the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

This should settle the issue anytime someone brings up the works salvation accusation against holiness believers.  But, alas it seems to fail every time!  They just like the zombies they are will continue to quote Eph 2 until they find themselves dead physically and sealed in their spiritual dead condition awaiting Judgment day.

The accusation we are working for our salvation is a false accusation because every holiness believer I know agree that there is NOTHING we can do apart from the power of God demonstrating His grace through us.  Ultimately, it is by faith we are saved because without faith in Christ and His atonement at the cross, no good work could ever help us no matter how great the work!  Without faith, no man can please God.  To compare any of our work to the work of Jesus Christ on the cross would be blasphemy.  This is the fatal spiritual error of:  Roman Catholics, JW’s, Mormons, SDA, etc.

Acts 10:34-35  Then Peter opened his mouth and said: “In truth I perceive that God shows no partiality. 35 But in every nation whoever fears Him and works righteousness is accepted by Him.

Acts 26:19-20   Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance.
Rom 2:1-16   Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.  But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.  And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God?  Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?  But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,  who “will render to each one according to his deeds”: eternal life to those who by patient continuance in doing good seek for glory, honor, and immortality;  but to those who are self-seeking and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness—indignation and wrath,  tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first and also of the Greek;  but glory, honor, and peace to everyone who works what is good, to the Jew first and also to the Greek.  For there is no partiality with God. For as many as have sinned without law will also perish without law, and as many as have sinned in the law will be judged by the law  (for not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified;  for when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do the things in the law, these, although not having the law, are a law to themselves,  who show the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and between themselves their thoughts accusing or else excusing them)  in the day when God will judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ, according to my gospel.
